The Defects arrived on the Belfast punk scene like a breath of fresh air back in the early eighties. Their live sound was raw and raucous and they rejuvenated a stagnant local scene which had been showing signs of burn out. Prior to their vinyl debut they had already built up a sizable local following and had played some storming gigs around Belfast, including now legendary shows at the Pound. Invariably these gigs closed with their ‘signature tune’ ‘Brutality’. Chants of SS RUC bellowed from the club situated just on the periphery of Musgrave Street Police Station. I caught the band live many times over their relatively short existence and they were always entertaining. The band last played together at the Ulster Hall, Belfast in 1984, supporting The Clash. The original line up are now currently rehearsing together again, so watch this site for reunion shows details……Sean O’Neill
